They were just being their usual considerate selves... aren't vegans always the nicest people in the room?

Oh, you guys...! no worries -- there were no leftovers ; )

The true case-in-point was a certain hostess of the event, who was able to refuse even a single bite... (name omitted to protect the sugar-innocent).

This is hilarious! The cobbler was GREAT! I remember salivating over it, but thinking that since there were only four pieces (right?) I was going to have to limit myself. Were there actually leftovers? If so, that is tragic! We just didn't want to be hogs.

Ha! Just finally catching up and came across this! Not sure if I want to even admit to being one of the vegans on the 4th...but...I found your cobbler outstanding (far better than my failed attempt at pina coladas!). Not only has our taste for all things animal changed, but by cutting back on sweets (hardly a treat a day for our kids, really), a nice taste satisfies the sweet tooth ;) (that is, unless it involves dark chocolate).

To make you feel better...I do recall raving and raving about your slaw--and even tried to imitate it for a party the following weekend (alas, I could not locate fresh dill in time)! You, your thoughtfulness, and your delicious food stay with us and keep us coming back ;)

Awww... nothing like love to make you search for dairy subs ; )

Gosh, it might require a post. It depends on what you're subbing. For baking and ice cream, I love using coconut milk (full-fat) instead of milk. For replacing butter, I'd use sunflower oil, olive oil, or palm oil shortening (if you need solid fat).

But -- honestly -- if it's a matter of intolerance (rather than allergy), he should try drinking raw milk from a cow-share dairy. It can be work to find -- but in ATL you should be able to find a source. I almost guarantee that he'd be able to stomach raw dairy over pasteurized. Worth a shot, if he misses milk!

Hope your planning is going well!

Can you list out some of those vegan/non-dairy substitutes? 3 years in Asia sans-dairy made my future-husband quite sensitive to lactose and returning to American foods has been quite the stomachache for him. would love some ideas on making favorites that won't upset him!

Maybe it's your maturity -- you've reached Gonnie's age, which is some sort of magical threshold for embracing blueberries.
